In an Ayn Rand world, we all want to focus on the individual when it comes to health, that’s no longer possible. We need to focus on others, we need to focus on what we mean to others and we need to get it together.
In the past five years, there’s been a movement to include Plus Size models in clothing lines, on magazine shoots and more. While we need to be inclusive and recognize a size 2 is not the norm, it’s become glaringly obvious that we’re now pretending plus size is somehow healthy. It is not. If you look at the picture above, you might be tempted to say these women are not obese. You'd be mistaken. Do they look great? Yes, they do but are they healthy. No, the answer is no.
What is obesity?
Obesity calculations are a derivative of muscle mass and fat percentages in the body. 20%+ is technically obese, though changes in the system are now trying to move that % up to 22% instead as doctors are now trying to accommodate for an average versus the previous norm.
Where do we stand with obesity?
According to https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/health-statistics/overweight-obesity, in a 2013-14 study reported;
· More than 1 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight.
· More than 2 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight or have obesity.
· More than 1 in 3 adults were considered to have obesity.
· About 1 in 13 adults were considered to have extreme obesity.
· About 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 were considered to have obesity.
These are not positive numbers and should not be viewed as such America. Obesity will kill you. It’s not ‘being fat’ that’s harmful, it’s the residual effects.
One woman’s truth
One of the women I love most, who gained 100 lbs after the birth of her second child, claims issues walking for long periods. Her feet swell. She’s struggling with hip pain now and wants to lose weight because she’s afraid when she gets older no one will be able to manage her ‘plus-size’ body.
“I’ve tried to curb my eating habits and I know I need to eat better,” she states, but I love food and mostly the food that’s not nutritional but unhealthy.
She’d been down the path of curbing her calories and in some cases, been hungry. She felt this was the only way to lose those unwanted pounds.
Movement is the answer
To start changing her weight and her patterns, I advised her to start moving more. Start walking 30 minutes a day and every day, try to go a little further than the day prior.
While everyone is saying abs can be found in the kitchen, we don’t all need abs. Some people just need to be able to walk up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. Some people just need to be able to go on vacation and walk without tiring.
While eating well is imperative, we’ve never evidenced such a sedentary lifestyle as we have today. We were never meant to be sitting for 8 hours. People are chained to their desks at work. If they have a desk job, they sometimes need to learn to “blink” so as not to dry out their eyes. We need to change these patterns or, with the further rise of technology, we’ll be kissing our health goodbye as we’ve started to already.
If we can just manage to start moving more, it’ll catch speed so that someone will actually feel that ‘not moving’ is bad which is the intention.
In closing, I’d like to say this blog was not intended to diminish anyone. Most of the people I love are actually technically ‘obese’. Their blood pressure is high, their diet is tragic and I really wish I could make changes for them, simply because I want to keep them in my life for as long as possible. I want them to age well, live to see their grandchildren and great grandchildren and selfishly so that I can enjoy them to a full extent.
So when you consider losing weight or becoming healthy, think not just of the implications for yourself but for others.
